The Laggard Finally Catches Up
Just got a mail from Hotmail saying that they have increased my mailbox size to 250 MB and the limit on attachment size is now 10 MB. Good Morning! Glad to know that you have finally realized how far behind you are lagging in the webmail spacerace. This increase in mailbox size is scheduled to happen by the end of August. The move must have been provoked by the other services offering huge mailboxes and people steadily ditching Hotmail for them. Yahoo! and Rediff are giving 1 GB space to its free subscribers and Gmail is gives 2 GB.
But to Hotmail's credit it must be said that they, being the first webmail service, probably have the largest subscriber base which might pose a huge logistical challenge and physical limitations on providing bigger mailboxes. They were already providing 250 MB in many countries but a large percentage of the users were still on the paltry 2 MB they started out with.
I, for one, use Gmail for my regular mails and the Hotmail a/c is only for logging on to the messenger where I usually get tonnes of junk everyday and the occasional mail from junta that does not remember my other Id's.
Spam filtering is another thing that Hotmail needs to invest thought in. The current spam filter is either ineffective or the mail ids are majorly exposed to outside world 'cos everyone I know on Hotmail cribs about the amount of spam they receive. Maybe I should just give in and go for that breast enlargement they keep enticing me with...
